G1

The long awaited open source Android Operating System from Google presently only exists on the G1 with the T-Mobile network. There has been a lot of excitement behind this OS, and many believe it has the potential to change the way we all interact with our cell phones.

Manufactured by HTC, the handset itself is not that exciting. The unique thing about this phone is the fact that it is the first to run the Android OS. This phone will be most appealing to users who are interested in exploring the features of the Android OS and what it has to offer. Some of the hiccups or shortcomings of the G1 might turn some people away, but the G1 has great potential to become a powerful mobile mini-computer.

The thing about the G1 is what it stands for; open source. The Android Operating System has huge potential to change the way we interact with our mobile devices. The HTC G1 is the first of many handsets and OS updates. We can expect future versions of this handset to blow us away.

BlackBerry Storm

The Blackberry Storm is the first BlackBerry with a touch screen. The Storm is a very sleek handset with a lot of potential, but it’s not exactly the iPhone killer some predicted.

The Storm touch screen does take some getting used to, especially if you are used to other traditional touch screen where all you have to do is tap on something to get your result. With the Storm screen, that tap is more of a full on click of the screen.

The Storm has a nice solid feel to it, weighing in at 5.47 ounces with the battery installed. The Storm looks rather simple from the outside, with only the four familiar BlackBerry keys align at the bottom of the phone. Although on the inside the Storm is full of features. It has to date connections with a micro-USB port on the left side of the Storm handset, and an Internet connection that runs on Verizon’s EV-DO Rev A. high-speed broadband network. Verizon’s EV-DO Rev A. provides data downloads up to 3.1 Mbps and uploads up to 1.8 Mbps, about six times faster than on non-EV-DO networks.

The Storm has a full HTML browser that works in portrait or landscape views. Another very cool feature of the Storm is that with a subscription to a Verizon Broadband Access plan, the Storm can be used as a wireless modem for a laptop. A very big downfall of the BlackBerry Storm is the fact that it does not include integrated Wi-Fi. Hopefully this will be one of the many tweaks that to the Storm on it’s way to the top.
